Visa sponsorship jobs in the UK: who actually sponsors

Search for visa sponsorship jobs in the UK and you get two kinds of page: lists of employers that sponsor, copied from a register nobody links, and agencies selling the visa itself. Here is what the register actually says, what a Skilled Worker visa costs in 2026, and the one rule that separates a real sponsor from a scam. As of 16 September 2026 the Home Office lists 127,714 organisations with a sponsor licence, and 122,342 of them can sponsor a Skilled Worker. That number is the good news and the misleading news at once, and this guide is about the difference.

What a sponsor licence does and does not mean

A licence means the Home Office has checked the employer and allowed it to issue Certificates of Sponsorship. It does not mean the employer is hiring, has a vacancy at your skill level, or will sponsor anyone from outside the UK this year. Most licence holders got one to keep a single existing employee. So a list of companies that sponsor is not a list of open doors; it is a list of employers who could open one. The register is public and updated several times a week, and the one useful thing to do with it is check that an employer who promises you sponsorship is actually on it, under its exact legal name.

Where the sponsors are

35,458 of the Skilled Worker licences are in London, more than the next twenty towns combined. Birmingham has 2,967, Manchester 2,768, Leicester 1,379, Glasgow 1,284, Bristol 1,244, Edinburgh 1,111 and Leeds 1,046. If you are searching from Bangalore or Lagos, that is the map: outside London the density drops by a factor of ten, and the ads that mention sponsorship follow the same shape. Of the 51 listings in our database that mention visas or relocation, 35 are in London.

What the Skilled Worker visa asks of you

Three things, in the order they stop people. A job on the eligible occupations list: the Home Office classifies every occupation code as higher skilled, medium skilled or ineligible, and the list was reworked in July 2025, so check the code for your job, not the job title. A salary of at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for that occupation, whichever is higher; lower thresholds exist for some new entrants, the Immigration Salary List and parts of health and education, and the page linked below has the current table. And English: you have to prove you can speak, read, write and understand it. The visa can run up to five years, and after five years you may be able to apply to settle.

What it costs, and who pays what

The part nobody puts in a headline: you pay for the visa, the employer pays for the right to sponsor you, and the employer is not allowed to hand its part to you.

For a three-year visa from India, your side is roughly £819 plus £3,105 in health surcharge plus the £1,270 you must show: about £5,200 before a flight. The employer side at a large company is £1,682 for the licence if it does not already hold one, then £1,320 in skills charge for the first year and £660 for every six months after, so around £4,300 over three years, per hire. That employer cost is why sponsorship is rare for junior roles. Nobody pays four thousand pounds in fees to fill a position they can fill locally next week.

How to tell a real sponsor from a scam

One rule does most of the work. The Home Office says the sponsor must pay the Immigration Skills Charge itself, and that the licence may be revoked if the sponsor asks the worker to pay that fee or any costs linked to the application. So any employer, agent or consultant asking you to pay for sponsorship, for the licence, or for a Certificate of Sponsorship is describing something that would cost a real employer its licence. Real sponsors do not do it. Second check: the employer's exact legal name is on the register. Third: the job is on the eligible list at or above the going rate. If any of the three fails, walk away. There is no version of this where paying makes it legitimate.

What the UK market looks like from here

As of September 2026 we track 1,222 open positions in the United Kingdom, 1,090 of them with the ad in English, and 51 that mention visas or relocation at all. That last figure is 4 %, and it is the honest size of the visa sponsorship jobs market as employers actually advertise it. Data, finance, design and engineering are where those 51 sit. What nobody mentions

First, two routes into the UK need no sponsor at all, and if you qualify for either you should stop reading about sponsorship. The Graduate visa lets you work after a UK degree with no employer attached. If you are an Indian citizen aged 18 to 30, the India Young Professionals Scheme is a ballot for a two-year visa with no sponsor and no job offer; places are limited and it runs in rounds, so check the current dates. Second, the salary threshold is a floor for the visa, not a market rate, and it rose sharply in 2024. A junior role at £28,000 is not sponsorable no matter how willing the employer is. That one number removes most entry-level work from the sponsorship conversation, which is why our 51 skew towards data and finance rather than hospitality.

Third, the register is a list of licence holders, not of hiring managers. Emailing four thousand licensed employers is a numbers game with a very small numerator. The employers who actually sponsor from abroad say so in the ad, which is the whole reason we read every ad for it.
